Digboi, Tinsukia, Assam

The first oil well ever to be sunk in Asia was in Digboi, Tinsukia district in the northeastern region of the Indian state of Assam. Digboi, also referred to as the "Oil City of Assam," was discovered in the 19th century. The city is home to Asia's first oil well, a popular tourist destination in Assam. Digboi still has a colonial feel, hidden among blue hills and rolling plains covered in emerald green tea plantations. This is perhaps the most condensed, if fanciful, account of the legend surrounding the discovery and naming of Digboi. Buses and minivans used for public transportation can take you to Digboi. Several firms operate buses between Digboi and Guwahati as well as other nearby locations. The primary means of transportation in the city is the rickshaw.
